Japanese startup makes waves with $7,000 single-seat electric car
A Japanese startup is making waves in the market with a compact electric car that could change the way people move around in a world of cramped urban environments and energy-saving trends. KG Motors, based in the suburbs of Hiroshima, has developed a battery-powered single-seat electric car that can reach a top speed of 60 km/h and travel 100 km on a single charge. The charging time is 5 hours. The expected selling price of this model is around $7,000.
Although it has not been officially launched, more than half of the 3,300 cars scheduled for delivery by March 2027 have already been pre-ordered.
KG Motors’ early success is remarkable when compared to the roughly 2,000 EVs Toyota Motor plans to sell domestically in 2024. It also shows the potential of the small, low-cost EV segment in Japan, where EVs are still a relatively new phenomenon.
KG Motor founder and CEO Kazunari Kusunoki said the idea came from his own experience of seeing large cars struggling to navigate narrow streets. He believes that small, accessible vehicles are better suited to Japan’s transportation infrastructure.
